The Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour, Jomo Sibiya, MP, will on Thursday, 07 August 2025 lead a multidisciplinary High Impact Blitz Inspection that seeks to ensure compliance. This is prior to the National Day Against Child Labour Commemoration scheduled for Friday, 08 August 2025 in Potchefstroom. These inspections will be conducted jointly with other law enforcement agencies and Government Departments responsible for child safety.
Though the blitz inspection will mainly focus on employment of children, it will also test compliance levels with the labour laws and regulations that include among others, Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA, National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), Unemployment Insurance Contributions Act (UICA) and; Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA). It will also focus on the employment of undocumented foreign nationals.
Child labour continues to be a persistent issue affecting millions of children globally, including in South Africa. Factors such as poverty, lack of access to quality education and certain cultural practices contribute to its prevalence.
