Speech for delivery by Ms Phumzile Mgcina, Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour, on the occasion of the National Day of
9 November 2024

Your Excellency, Ambassador Andreas Peschke

Your Excellencies, Ambassadors and High Commissioners Distinguished Guests

Ladies and Gentlemen

I am honoured to represent the Government of South Africa on this occasion as we celebrate an extraordinary day in the history of Germany and the unique relationship between our two countries. Thirty-five years ago, the walls that divided Germany fell, ushering in a new era of peace, democracy, and unity for the German people. It is a celebration of more than just the reunification of a nation; it is a symbol of hope, perseverance, and the triumph of the human spirit over division and adversity.

For us, the story of German unity resonates deeply. We, too, have our own journey of reconciliation and nation-building. Our struggle to overcome apartheid, like the struggle of the German people, was driven by a shared commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity. The peaceful transition to democracy in South Africa and the reunification of Germany serve as powerful examples of what can be achieved when nations confront their pasts and strive to build inclusive, united futures.

The partnership between South Africa and Germany is built on a foundation of mutual respect and shared values. Over the years, our two countries have strengthened bonds in many areas, including diplomacy, trade, education, science, and cultural exchanges. Germany has played a significant role in supporting South Africa's development, and we have benefited immensely from the expertise and innovation that Germany brings to global challenges such as climate change, economic transformation, and renewable energy.

In today's world, the importance of unity cannot be overstated. As we face complex challenges such as inequality, the effects of climate change, and growing global tensions, it is essential that nations work together in the spirit of solidarity and cooperation. The lessons of history remind us that we are stronger when we are united, that division can be overcome, and that peace and justice can prevail when we stand together.

South Africa remains committed to deepening our relationship with Germany. Together, we can continue to foster the bonds of friendship that have been built over the years, promote economic growth, and ensure that the benefits of our cooperation are felt by all our citizens.

As we celebrate German unity today, let us also reaffirm our dedication to the ideals that bind us - freedom, equality, democracy, and peace. Let us take inspiration from this day to continue building bridges, breaking down barriers, and creating a more just and united world.

With these words, may I propose a toast to President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the people of the Federal Republc of Germany and continued friendship and partnership between our two nations.

I thank you
