South Africa’s President Ramaphosa to address 45th ARLAC meeting of labour, empowerment and manpower ministers

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver a closing address during the 45th African Regional Labour Administration Centre (ARLAC) Governing Council meeting that brings together labour, empowerment and manpower ministers.

The 45th ARLAC Governing Council meeting started on Tuesday with a meeting of senior officials to discuss a number of issues ranging from the future of the organisation, its constitution, programmes, projects, member subscription and other labour market issues among others. The meeting continues today.

The African Regional Labour Administration Centre Governing Council meeting is being held at Zimbali Lodge north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Tomorrow (28 February) there will be a Ministerial high level symposium on violence and harassment of women and men at work - which will be chaired by South Africa’s Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant, who is a member of the governing council of ARLAC. Oliphant will on Friday chair a session to launch the ILO’s – Future of Work Global Commission’s Report.

The day’s proceedings will conclude with a gala dinner to celebrate ARLAC’S 45 years in labour administration and the ILO’s centenary. The ILO’s centenary celebrations started in January and will continue in various countries, and fora until the end of the year.

Also expected to share the stage with President Ramaphosa will be International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General, Guy Ryder. Their addresses will be followed by a conversation of Ministers from Zambia, Eswatini, Kenya and Sierra Leone.

The African Regional Labour Administration Centre is based in Zimbabwe. The organisation’s centre was formed in 1974, as　a project of the ILO and United Nations Development Programme for the development of Labour Administration in member countries. The organisation’s membership is drawn from Anglophone Africa countries. Member countries of ARLAC include: Botswana, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.　

The specific general objectives of the Centre, as provided for in article 2 of the ARLAC Agreement include the following:

The provision of training for officials　 at all levels of labour administration system. 
The provision of consultancy and advisory services directed towards strengthening labour administration in member countries 
The undertaking of studies and research in all aspects of labour administration 
The provision of information services for the benefits of member countries 
Production and publishing of training materials 
The meeting on Friday will start at 08:30am.
