The Minister of Employment and Labour, Ms Nomakhosazana Meth, working in support of South Africa's democratic values and in the spirit of cooperation with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), calls on ALL employers and employees across the country to work together to ensure that eligible workers are afforded the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa under Section 2A of the national public holidays Act of 1994 has declared the 4th of November 2026 a national public holiday. As South Africans prepare to participate in the democratic process, the Department encourages employers and workers to engage proactively and make reasonable workplace arrangements that support voter participation while maintaining operational requirements and service delivery commitments.
Minister Nomakhosazana Meth maintains that the right to vote remains one of the most important freedoms secured by South Africa's constitutional democracy, and that workplaces have an important role to play in fostering active citizenship and supporting democratic participation.
"The right to vote is a cornerstone of our democracy and one of the most significant gains of our constitutional dispensation. As a country, we must continue to safeguard this right and create an environment in which all eligible citizens are able to participate meaningfully in the democratic process.
We encourage employers and employees to work together in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect. Through proper planning and constructive engagement, workplaces can support employees who wish to cast their votes while ensuring that business operations continue effectively," says Minister Meth.
The Department emphasises that democratic participation strengthens social cohesion, nation-building and inclusive economic growth. Respect for constitutional rights in the workplace contributes to stable labour relations and reinforces South Africa's democratic institutions.
The Department further encourages employees to communicate with their employers in advance regarding voting arrangements where necessary. Open and transparent engagement can assist both parties in identifying practical solutions that balance workplace requirements with the exercise of constitutional rights.
The Department of Employment and Labour will continue to work with all NEDLAC social partners, including organised business, organised labour, Civil Society and relevant institutions, to promote awareness of workers' rights and responsibilities and to encourage active citizenship among all South Africans.
As the nation prepares to exercise its democratic choice, the Department calls on all stakeholders to contribute positively towards a free, fair and participatory electoral process.
"Democracy flourishes when citizens participate. Every eligible South African should be encouraged to make their voice heard through the ballot box and to contribute to the future of our nation," said Minister Meth.
