The Department of Employment and Labour inspectors are currently investigating an explosion at the Engen Refinery in Wentworth, Durban. The explosion took place around the time the new shift had started for the day. Six workers who had just started their shift are known to have suffered from smoke inhalation.
At this time, it is not clear if there were additional injuries or fatalities outside of the refinery other than the six workers in the plant who suffered smoke inhalation, as the matter is still being investigated. It is also not entirely clear what caused the explosion that took place this morning and the investigation will focus on what was the main cause.
The Department is satisfied that the fire was brought under control shortly after the explosion by the internal Engen team in conjunction with the Local Authority thereby preventing further possible casualties. The investigation continues.
