On 09 July 2024, the Department of Employment and Labour held a briefing to the Portfolio Committee of Employment and Labour, Parliament on their Annual Performance Plans (APP) and Strategic Plans for the fiscal year 2024/2025. This briefing took place at 120 Plein Street, Committee Room 2.
The APP serves as a critical instrument in allocating the Department's budget. It ensures that the distribution of funds is in alignment with the strategic objectives and performance targets set for the fiscal year. This alignment is crucial for the effective and efficient utilisation of resources.
The presentation of the Department of Employment and Labour APP primarily focused on its policy mandate, which encompasses the following key areas:
In addition to the APP presentation, the Chief Financial Officer presented the Department's budget, and the Chief Executive Officer of Supported Employment Enterprises (SEE) discussed the importance of job creation for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). Minister Meth expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to present the APP 2024/2025, emphasising that one should speak not out of obligation, but because they have something meaningful to say.
Minister Nomakhosazana Meth also shared that she had met with staff to familiarise herself with previous performance metrics. While the ministry has reviewed the APP 2024/2025, they still need to evaluate the department's performance to build confidence. The Minister highlighted that “we are transitioning from the 6th Administration to the 7th Administration."
Minister Meth mentioned that the cabinet will convene next week, and we are awaiting their guidance to align with the objectives of the 7th administration.
On 11 July 2024, the Portfolio Committee on Employment and Labour is scheduled to hold its Budget Vote 31 Debate at 14:00 in the Good Hope Chamber within the Parliament precinct.
The Department is striving to optimise its work in the 7th administration for a more significant impact in the sector. These events and discussions play a pivotal role in shaping the future of employment and labour in South Africa concluded, Minister Meth.
