The Department of labour has developed a powerful system that will allow workers to report companies that fail to comply with the National Minimum Wage (NMW), a meeting was told in Boksburg, Gauteng on Thursday.
The system will however, be officially launched by the President on workers' day in Durban. Called the Impimpi Alive, the system will enable workers to send anonymous SMS messages to the Department after which an inspector will be dispatched to the factory within 48 hours .
Thembinkosi Mkalipi, chief director responsible for Labour Relations in the Department , said: ' we want to make the system available online. It will be marketed widely on radio, TV and in the print media. We are confident that workers will welcome it and use it effectively
He said the system will be a deterrent to employers. If employers know that there is a high risk of being caught, they will comply, Mkalipi said.
Mkalipi was addressing over 400 stakeholders from Labour unions at the 2nd CCMA annual Labour conference at Birchwood Hotel. Mkalipi said that through the soon to be launched system, names of recalcitrant companies will be published.
He said there was high probability that companies that fail to comply with the NMW also do not abide by other Labour laws like paying the Unemployment Insurance Fund
The two day session will also address the way forward to the successful implementation of the employment law amendment as well as the NMW. -ENDS-
