Department of Employment and Labour resume campaign to assist former Education Assistants in the Limpopo Province
12 January 2024

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), an entity of the Department of Employment and Labour in the Limpopo Province, is set to resume its second leg of its “Taking Services to the People" Campaign to assist former Education Assistants (EA's) who were part of the phase 4 project.

The former EA's were employed as part of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), which was implemented as part of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) across all nine provinces to reduce youth unemployment in the country.

The campaign in Limpopo began in November 2023 after contracts for former EA's ended in September 2023. An estimated 35 000 EA's were affected across the province. Since the start of the initiative, over nine thousand applications have since been finalised.

UIF Director Beneficiary Services Vuledzani Netshituka encouraged the former EA's to take advantage of this opportunity that is coming directly in the communities where they reside. He said although the number of affected EAs is significantly high, many are still not showing up as expected to get assisted.

“It is our mission to bring our services closer to the people in an effort to reduce the traveling burden and high influx of clients at our offices. Through this initiative we want to ensure that all former EA's eventually receive what is due to them from the Fund," said Netshituka.

Netshituka also urged former EA's falling under phase one, two and three to not despair as the department is working tirelessly to find a solution to deal with their undeclared and expired claims.

“We are aware that hundreds of EA's falling under phase one, two, and three are still waiting in anticipation to receive monies due to them. This is one of our priority areas of the project as it affects a large number of young people in the province. Once the department finds a solution, an announcement will be made through various communication platforms," said Netshituka.

To increase the employment prospects of the former EA's, the Departments' Public Employment Services (PES) branch will also be on-site to register their CVs on the Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA) system for possible future employment opportunities.

The first week of the campaign will kick-off on Monday, 15 January – Friday, 19 January 2024 at the following districts:
