Department of Employment and Labour launches the amended National Code of Practice (NCOP) for Training Providers of Lifting
04 April 2025

The Department of Employment and Labour has today, 04 April 2025, launched the amended National Code of Practice (NCOP) for Training Providers of Lifting Machine Operators (LMO) at a workshop held in Pretoria.

The amended Code of Practice provides clarity and direction to all stakeholders directly or indirectly related to the accreditation and provision of training to lifting machinery/equipment operators in South Africa.

According to the Department of Employment and Labour Director: Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Jacob Malatse, “the code will put players in the field to play and referees to manage the game rather than having players and referees playing and also refereeing".

Malatse told the workshop that the certificate of competence will be issued to learners orderly and transparent manner by the Quality Council for Trades & Occupations (QCTO) and no longer by training providers and will no longer expire.

He said the code will also provide direction regarding the foundation for training of all lifting machine/equipment operators with the objective of ensuring standardised training and safety standards that will impact directly on reducing risk of injury/death to employees /persons or damage to plant and equipment.

The launch is the first in a series of occupational health and safety events that will culminate with the commemoration of the World Day for Health and Safety which the ILO observes on 28 April 2025. The Department will observe the day on 25 April 2025.

As build up to the commemoration on 25 April, the following events are lined up:
