The Inspection and Enforcement Services Branch of the Department of Employment and Labour in the North West Province, has partnered with the Department of Home Affairs and the South African Police Service, on a week-long blitz inspection that commenced on Monday, 11 February 2025 and scheduled to end on Friday, 14 February 2025.
The blitz inspection is focusing on the Metal Sector with the main focus being on the Iron and Steel throughout the province.
According to Milly Ruiters, Chief Inspector in the Department, the blitz inspection will test the level of compliance with all the labour laws in the sector, however, the main focus will be on Occupational Health and Safe Act (OHSA) and all its regulations as a prelude towards the National OHS Conference that will focus on the Iron and Steel Industry.
“This blitz inspection is focuses on compliance with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), Employment Services Act (ESA) and the National Minimum Wage (NMW) Act, with main focus being on the Occupational Health and Safety in the Iron and Steel industry," said Ruiters.
The Iron and Steel industry is identified as one of the high risk industries and the Department among others, use the blitz inspections as another mechanism to ensure continued safer and healthier workplaces as employers/workplaces are visited unannounced. The blitz inspections are also used to improve compliance with the Labour Laws.
The National OHS Conference will be held in the North West Province from the 26-28 February 2025 at Protea Hotel, Klerksdop.
