Department of Employment and Labour cautions employers on employment equity (EE) misinformation online
18 October 2023

The Department of Employment and Labour is in the middle of Employment Equity (EE) reporting period and wishes to caution employers on misinformation being peddled online.

The Department has noted with concern on the circulation of a phishing email being sent to its clients with the subject “REPORT".

Department of Employment and Labour Director: Employment Equity, Ntsoaki Mamashela said: “the Department wishes to warn that the email circulating to all its EE clients with the subject named “REPORT" is not coming from the Department of Employment and Labour. It is malicious phishing emails and it should not be responded".

The phishing email is requesting clients to click on “REPORT".

The so-called Department's user name used on the email sender “Ntsoaki Mamashela" also has incorrect title and branch details.

“You are advised not to circulate or click any links associated with the email, your respective ICT units are further advised to block the sender to your ICT networks in order to avoid further compromise of sensitive information," Mamashela said.

The Department is in the process of investigating the matter further and the origin of the email, she apologised for inconveniences caused.

The scamsters are warning clients that a report has been filed against them. They (scamsters) further say to clients that they have breached the policy of the Department of Employment and Labour. The scammer further threatens clients that sanctions have been put in place regarding the “REPORT".

Following the recent hosting of the national EE workshops on the legislative amendments the Department has not issued such correspondence.

The EE reporting season opened on 1 September 2023 for both manual and electronic reporting. The manual reporting closes on 31 October 2023 and the online reporting will close on 15 January 2024.
