The Compensation Fund (CF), an entity of the Department of Employment and Labour, has warned against the scam that claims that the Fund is paying R20 000 to all workers who have contracted COVID-19 at work.
"This is not true and if anyone tells you that, do not believe them. We do not have a set amount for any compensation for sickness or injury on duty. This is determined by prevailing set of circumstances and the merits of each case. We appeal to all people in this country to avoid this scam and if they have any queries, to visit our labour centres or call 0860 105 530," said Vuyo Mafata, the Commissioner for CF.
The rumour has been doing the rounds in the Eastern Cape mostly. "While it is true that the Fund has paid out some claims and is at the moment dealing with close to 8000 claims of which 4816 have been lodged with the Fund directly, it is not true that there is a set amount of R20 000. The Compensation Fund does compensate for COVID-19 claims that have been contracted while on duty. Compensation payments for each claim is done according to its own merit and as per the prescribed procedure by the COID Act," he added.
Employers must submit claims for employees contracting Covid-19 or injured on duty to the Compensation Fund as prescribed by the Act. For More information email to: Cfcallcentre@labour.gov.za or Call 0860 105 350 to register the claim.
Commissioner Mafata also added that workers should always note that Compensation Fund Services are free.
