On Wednesday, 23 July 2026, the Department of Employment and Labour's Compensation Fund urged employers to be complaint of Compensation for Occupational Injuries Diseases Act (COIDA) at the Hospitality Sector Workshop in Cape Town, Western Cape Province.

The strategic focus of the workshop was on strengthening compliance with COIDA within the sector and enhancing relations with employers.

According to the Assistant Director: Employer Compliance, Mr Aubrey Mukwevho in terms of the 2025 Return of Earnings (ROE) Submission the Western Cape Province in the Hospitality Sector is at 2285 compliant and 4871 non-complaint resulting in 31.93% compliance. He advised the employers who are not compliant to check the status if there are any penalties or interests so that they can arrange a payment plan.

“From the 1st of April 2026, the Fund started charging 10% penalty in cases where employers are not registered and not submitting ROE and making payments within the time frame with Compensation Fund that another 10% will be imposed on the employers reporting late or not reporting claims, the 10% penalties are calculated on the overall turnover of the company" concluded Mr Mukwevho.

Ms Nqabisa Pama, Pension Administrator COID delivered a presentation on the timely submission of documentation and claims additionally as well as on adjudication of claims especially the processing of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). She reminded the employers that injured employees are entitled to chronic medication; and that they must assist employees by transporting them to seek medical attention related to Injury on Duty (IOD).

Ms Thembi Jini, Senior Pension Administrator emphasised the importance of submitting correct medical invoices to avoid payment delays. She further highlighted that according to the gazette all medical reports should be submitted to the Fund within 14 days. In concluding her presentation, she said that incomplete online submissions occur because of the use of incorrect claim numbers with no medical reports. Employers were made aware that once liability is accepted for claims; all medical reports must be captured and uploaded with all the required documents on CompEasy system.

The Fund will continuously engage different sectors to strengthen COID compliance.
