Unemployment Insurance Fund’s (UIF) Labour Activation Programmes to create 20 115 new employment opportunities for Mpumalanga residents

At least 20 115 residents of Mpumalanga Province will benefit from new employment opportunities that will be created by labour activation programmes that were launched by Employment and Labour Minister Mr. T.W Nxesi in collaboration with the Premier of Mpumalanga, Ms. R.M Mthsweni-Tsipane on Wednesday 24 April.

The employment opportunities will be derived from 17 labour activation programmes that have been approved by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) for implementation in the province over a period of 12 to 36 months, at a cost of R660 million. Sectors where opportunities will be created includes among others agriculture, manufacturing, construction, ICT, hospitality, media as well as engineering.

Over 200 guests including Employment and Labour Deputy Minister B.E Moloi, Mpumalanga Social Development MEC Ms. L.L Ntshalintshali, Executive Mayor of the City of Mbombela Municipality Cllr S. Makushe-Mazibuko, Chairperson of the Mpumalanga House of Traditional Leaders Inkhosi S.G. Ngomane and UIF Board members attended the occasion which was held at Emnotweni Arena in Nelspruit

According to the Department of Employment and Minister Mr T.W Nxesi the labour activation programme forms part of the President's Economic Recovery and Reconstruction Programme.

“Labour activation programmes are a strategic element in the fight against unemployment in the country and the recovery of our economy. We are implementing these programmes through partnerships with all government departments and the private sector," said Minister Nxesi.

To achieve the Department of Employment and Labour's goal of creating more than 2 million opportunities nationally, an amount of R23.8 billion has been allocated for the implementation of labour activation programmes.

Participants will be recruited and selected from the Department of Employment and Labour's Employment Services of South Africa database (ESSA).
