10 May 2023

Esteemed guests, distinguished delegates, and esteemed colleagues,

As we conclude the political session of the Second Meeting of the BRICS Employment Working Group, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to each and every one of you for your invaluable contributions and active participation in this important gathering.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Eastern Cape Premier, Honourable Oscar Mabuyane, for his thought-provoking and inspiring remarks.

Your contribution, Honourable Premier, has been instrumental in highlighting the critical issues that the BRICS Partnership must address as we work towards a more equitable and just world.

The support offered by the Provincial Government of the Eastern Cape, the Municipalities of Ndlambe and Sarah Baartman as well as many entities in ensuring that this meeting is a success is highly appreciated.

I would also like to thank the Chair of the BRICS Employment Working Group, DG Lamati, for his outstanding leadership throughout the technical meetings. Your dedication and hard work have ensured the success of the meetings.

To all representatives of the BRICS Member Countries and invited African states, regional and international organisations, senior officials, and all participants in this meeting, thank you for your insights, contributions, and unwavering commitment to ensuring Decent Work.

To the young people present here, we hope that this learning experience provides you with valuable insights and knowledge that will help you shape your future. We recognise the importance of youth engagement and the critical role that young people play in shaping the future of work and the world.

Ladies and Gentlemen;

As we conclude this session, I want to reiterate that the BRICS Partnership has the potential to be a powerful force for change in the world. Our collective economic and political clout can be a beacon of hope for millions of people around the world who seek a better life.

To achieve this, we must intensify our collaborative efforts in international bodies such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Group of Twenty (G20).

Additionally, we must work together to ensure that the benefits of economic growth and Decent Work are distributed more equitably, and disadvantaged groups are not left behind.

Our proposal for a BRICS-wide Productivity Ecosystem for Decent Work is a major step in solidifying our Partnership in the sphere of labour and employment. I am pleased to share that the suggestion has overwhelming support from the BRICS Member Countries.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the BRICS Member Countries for their unwavering commitment to upholding the values that we share as a global community. Your dedication to promoting cooperation, mutual respect, and understanding is an inspiration to us all.

By espousing these values, we have the potential to create a more just and equitable world. You have shown that it is possible to work together to achieve common goals, even in the face of adversity and challenges.

Finally, I wish the Employment Working Group success in its journey towards developing a Ministerial Declaration that will serve as a beacon of hope and progress for our people.

Thank you once again for your participation in this meeting, and I look forward to continuing our dialogue and cooperation in the future.

Much appreciated!
