Department of Labour intervene on wages
25 August 2010
A total amount of 7521 complaints from employees in various sectors within the Limpopo Province were received through the Departmental Labour Centres between April and June 2010. This prompted an intense investigation that resulted in the recovery of a total amount of R64, 510.60 from various employers. The said amount is as a result of the outstanding wages that various employers were found not to be paying according to various sectoral determinations and in other instances according to an agreement reached between an employer and an employee through contacts of employment.
The methods used to recover this amount were done through Departmental Inspectorate and the Client Service Officers from all twelve Labour Centres within the province. Sectors which were found to be problematic with regards to payment of employees include amongst others Agriculture, Private Security, Domestic, Hospitality sectors respectively. Employers who were found wanting were ordered to make arrangement to pay the outstanding amount owed to their employees in the absence of the Inspectorate within a given period of time.
Complaints received during this period are also inclusive of other conditions of employment such as contract of employment, meal intervals, overtime payment, night works, public holidays, maternity leave. Punitive measures were given accordingly, so that such employers take necessary interventions to fix the conditions found.
