Affirmative Action-Mdladlana
26 August 2010
Labour Minister, Membathisi Mdladlana has reiterated that the main aim of the Employment Equity Act is to address imbalances in the workplace by eliminating unfair discrimination, introducing affirmative action measures for the equitable representation of the designated groups at all occupational levels and categories, hence a call on all employers to diversify their workplaces. The Minister was replying a parliamentary question from Advocate A de W Alberts of the Freedom Front Plus, on whether he is considering a sunset clause to terminate affirmative action in general and in respect of white people who matriculated after 1994.
“I am not, by any means, considering a sunset clause to terminate affirmative action both generally and in respect of white people who have matriculated”; Mdladlana categorically stated.
He said as reflected in the recently published 10th Commission for Employment Equity Annual Report, there was still a massive underrepresentation of designated groups in the workplace, particularly in the private sector. In line with international trends, the government still views affirmative action as a necessary tool in addressing these imbalances and disparities in the workplace, said Mdladlana.
“In light of these prevailing inequalities, any debate about a sunset clause to terminate affirmative action is irrelevant and very pre-mature”, Mdladlana emphasized.
