Minister praises Construction Workers, Employers for wage agreement
15 July 2009
Labour Minister, Membathisi Mdladlana today (Wed) commended construction workers’ unions and the employers for reaching an agreement on wage increases. Mdladlana said the agreement would contribute immensely to the country’s final preparations for hosting the Soccer World Cup next year. The Minister also paid tribute to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration for the role this body played in brokering the agreement.
He said the agreement once again demonstrated the power of social dialogue in resolving differences. Praising the Local Organizing Committe, Business South Africa, NACTU and COSATU for encouraging the parties to reach such agreement, Mdladlana re-emphasised that as the Minister, he normally does not interfere with the bargaining processes but his role was also to encourage the parties to negotiate until a final agreement is reached.
