Minister Mdladlana’s Workers’ Day Message

30 April 2009

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana today congratulated South Africa’s working class ahead for tomorrow’s nationwide Workers Day celebrations which form part of global festivities.

In his May Day message, Minister Mdladlana said workers had come a long way from the days of adversarial unfriendly labour relations environment in which they used to operate under successive regimes prior to 1994.

“While the government and its social partners under the current political order have made strides in delivering a new labour dispensation through consensus on legislation and other statutory measures including the CCMA and Labour Court, the legacy of the past continues to manifest itself in various ways at the workplace and business environment even today. I would therefore like to remind our fellow countrymen and women that as we celebrate, we should pause to spare a thought for those who are yet to enjoy these basic worker-rights,” he said.

Urging workers to preserve the significance of the May Day, the Minister said it was important for everyone not to treat the May Day holiday as an ordinary public holiday.

“I therefore urge employers to allow workers to attend these May Day celebrations, the Minister said.
