A North West farm worker is still recovering at the Bophelong
Hospital in Mafikeng two weeks after his hand was severed by a
harvesting machine.
Labour inspectors in the province have since ordered a ban on the
machine while investigations into the accident are continuing.
The accident occurred at a farm in Delareyville while 20-year-old
Joseph Mbewe, a seasonal worker, was harvesting ground nuts using a
thrashing machine which accidentally pulled in his jacket, swinging him
around and severing his hand in the process.
Preliminary investigations have found that Mbewe was not wearing
protective clothing at the time of the accident and that the machine’s
revolving propeller was not covered as required by law.
Meanwhile the department has confirmed that all the necessary
documentation for Mbewe’s compensation has been processed and submitted
to the Compensation Fund in terms of the law.
The employer will be allowed to use the machine only when inspectors
are satisfied with measures ensuring the elimination of any dangers to
workers.
