North West Farmer In Trouble Over Child Labour
A Schweizer Reneke farmer in the North West Province is facing prosecution for contravening the law
Released by The Department of Labour on 08 January 2008
A Schweizer Reneke farmer in the North West Province is facing
prosecution for contravening the law that prohibits the employment of
under-aged children. Labour officials inspecting the area for law
enforcement found the employer using 16 minors, the youngest of whom
was only 11 years old, as employees at his Gaspan farm. They were being
made to carry 50 kilogram bags of fertilizer on their heads, and
ploughed sunflower. The Department of Labour has once again urged
parents to protect their children and report all acts of
exploitation.
