Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana has expressed great sadness at
the passing on of former trade union leader and activist, John
Gomomo in the Eastern Cape today (Tues). His death happens only
two weeks after the Minister and Cosatu General-secretary Zwelinzima
Vavi paid Gomomo a visit while he was hospitalized at Uitenhage at the
time.
Paying tribute to the former Cosatu President, Minister Mdladlana
said in a statement today: “Comrade Gomomo has been at the
fore-front of the Workers’ struggle. His selfless service for the
benefit of the down-trodden remains unparalleled. His passing is
a huge loss indeed. I wish to express deepest condolences to his
dear wife and family and to assure them that they are in our prayers
during this difficult period.”
Gomomo was the second president of Cosatu after Elijah Barayi.
He led the Congress for many years until he was seconded to Parliament
soon after liberation in 1994.
