Inspections Find Some Hospitality Employers Still Underpay Workers
Released by Department of Labour on 06 June 2008
Despite the existence of a law stipulating a minimum wage for
hospitality workers in the country, results of the latest nationwide
Labour inspections of the sector suggest a large number of employers
are still disregarding the legislation.
Figures released by the Labour Department this week show that of the
3191 hospitality workplaces inspected during the week-long scrutiny,
only 1 874 employers were found to be complying, while 1 313 transgress
– resulting in 403 issued with contravention notices, while operations
had to be halted at 10 workplaces until they improve. Three of the
employers – two in Gauteng and one in Mpumalanga are now facing
prosecution as a result of the raids.
Of the total number of workplaces visited, 403 employers were also
charged with serious contravention of occupational health and safety
measures.
