Law-flouting security boss arrested

A security company owner is scheduled to appear in court this week following his arrest in Durban last Friday.  The man who cannot be identified at this stage, was caught during a joint clampdown which involved the Department of Labour inspectors and the police.

The Newlands-based employer was arrested for failing to comply with the labour laws and for obstructing inspections at his workplace. He further failed to adhere to a subpoena issued against him, requiring that he appear before an inspector at the Durban Labour Centre.

His supposed appearance was aimed at resolving numerous complaints received from 15 disgruntled workers regarding non-compliance with the Sectoral Determination for Private Security.

Other accusations from workers were that the employer did not adhere to the prescribed minimum wage levels for the sector, leave pay, annual bonuses and remuneration for over-time.

Zolisa Sigabi, spokesperson for the department said: “Attempts by inspectors to verify the allegations were unsuccessful with numerous calls made to the employer being ignored.  That left us with no choice but to order his arrest.’’
