Non-compliance allegations unproven
Released by Department of Labour on 15 January 2004
The Department of Labour inspectors, who swooped on Equity Aviation
following complaints from a trade union regarding the treatment of
workers at the company, have found that it is compliant with labour
legislation.
Inspectors were dispatched to Equity Aviation ? which is embroiled
in a baggage handler strike ? after reports were received that workers
were forced to work 17-hour days and the company was ignoring
Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
Interviews with both members and non-members of the union on site
revealed that the company adhered to legally determine working hours.
Inspectors also found there were no violations of the OHS Act.
Inspectors also checked on compliance with other aspects of labour
legislation, including whether its workers are registered with the
Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Fund, and the employer
was found to be compliant.
Equity Aviation workers went on strike after wage negotiations
deadlocked in December.
The Minister of Labour Membathisi Mdladlana said the ANC government
is compelled to investigate all companies that are alleged to have
contravened our legislation in order to ensure that worker rights are
being protected and employers comply with labour laws.
