Inspectors visit Equity Aviation

Released by Department of Labour on 13 January 2004

The Department of Labour has dispatched inspectors to Equity Aviation after receiving complaints that the company ? which is embroiled in a baggage handler strike ? was forcing workers to work 17-hour days and ignoring Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

Inspectors will also check on compliance with other aspects of labour legislation, including whether its workers are registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Fund.

Equity Aviation workers went on strike after wage negotiations deadlocked in December.

Interviews are currently being conducted with workers ? including those replacement workers employed during the strike ? and management to determine whether or not the claims about working hours are true.

The Minister of Labour said the Department would not allow any employer to exploit replacement workers and all reports of non-compliance with labour legislation will be investigated.

?It is unacceptable for any employer to flout labour legislation and action will be taken against those that do,? the Minister said.
