Contravention orders for East London construction company
Contravention orders for East London construction company
Released by Department of labour on 24 January 2004
The Department of Labour?s ongoing focus on the construction
industry has seen a further nine contravention orders issued to an
Eastern Cape construction company branch and three of its
subcontractors.
During blitz inspections in East London, Group Five Construction
Company was served with contravention notices for contravening urban
machinery regulations and ignoring regulations governing the use of
facilities.
Inspectors, led by Deputy Director-General of Service Delivery, Dr
Vanguard Mkosana, issued a further seven contravention orders to
sub-contractors Madopholo, Number Quick and Thembuland.
Regulations that the subcontractors had failed to adhere to include
those governing minimum wages, civil engineering regulations, records,
overtime payment and attendance registers.
The inspections followed a nighttime blitz in East London where
operations at Wa Wina Bakeries were halted after inspectors found that
workers were locked in for the night with no access to emergency
exits.
?It is our duty as the government to ensure that all workers are
protected from unscrupulous employers with a total disregard of our
labour laws,? said Dr Mkosana.
