Released by Department of Labour on 24 January 2004
The Building Industry Federation of South Africa (BIFSA) and the
Construction Sector Education Training Authority (CETA) agreed
yesterday to participate in a joint process to address problems that
have impacted on training.
Minister of Labour, Membathisi Mdladlana after a number of
allegations, convened the meeting and counter-allegations were made
regarding training following the BIFSA Conference in September
2003.
The parties agreed to meet before the end of next week to
formulate a joint process to address the issues rose.
Minister Mdladlana said the parties agreed to report back to him
on the implementation of the agreement before the end of March.
"Following a frank exchange of views, the meeting ended on an
extremely positive note with all parties committing themselves to
resolve outstanding matters and ensure that training is taken forward
in the industry," the Minister said.
"I wish the parties well in the deliberations an I expect a
positive report in March," the Minister said.
"Skills development - particularly that targeted at previously
disadvantaged workers and unemployed young people - is of paramount
importance to the ANC government and we do not want to see it disrupted
as a result of misunderstanding and non-essential difference," the
Minister said.
