Charging for information on skills is illegal
Charging for information on skills is illegal
Released by Chief Directorate of Communication/Department of Labour
on 30 January 2004
Government will not charge money to job seekers in return for
offering advice or information on the government?s skills development
programme, the Minister of Labour Membathisi Mdladlana said
today.
Minister Mdladlana warned that this kind of practice was against
government policy and added that anyone charging people for rendering
such services on behalf of the Department of Labour should immediately
be treated with suspicion.
The Department?s lawyers are investigating a Mabopane based
operation in Pretoria who is charging for running information sessions
under the pretext that they have been sanctioned by government.
?It?s unfortunate that there are unscrupulous elements out there
who will take advantage of people in desperation to gain employment in
order to generate a quick profit without providing any tangible
benefit.
?One of the ANC government?s top most priorities is to develop
skills among our people and there is no way that my Department will
sanction the charging of people in return for information on accessing
skills development?
The Minister also made an appeal to anybody -particularly young
unemployed people- to contact their nearest Labour Centres or the
Sectoral Education and Training Authorities (Seta?s) for any advice
related to learnership programmes.
