Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana arrived in Zimbabwe today for a
five day meeting with Ministers from at least 19 other English-speaking
African countries at the 30th African Regional Labour Centre Governing
Council Meeting (ARLAC) at Zimbabwe?s Kariba.
Issues to be discussed at ARLAC include labour challenges in
general, labour administration in the context of globalization, and
working conditions in the fishing sector.
Delegations from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the
United Nations Development Programme will also be represented at the
Governing Council meeting.
This high level forum emerges from the New Partnership for African
Development (NEPAD) and focuses on those issues relating to employment
and labour that were not comprehensively dealt with by NEPAD.
"This meeting is a milestone in the articulation of labour matters.
It is also hoped that a comprehensive programme can emerge out of these
discussions. Of importance to us is to protect workers in the most
vulnerable areas especially in the fishing industry," said Minister
Mdladlana.
