Minister, Domestic workers in second round of engagements
11 March 2009
In a sequel to last month’s one-day direct engagement with Stellensboch domestic workers in the Western Cape, Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana tomorrow (Thur) takes time off his tight election campaign schedule to repeat the exercise – this time at the invitation of Sea Point employees just outside Cape Town.
The February 12 Imbizo at a Stellenbosch sports ground enabled vulnerable workers to instantly access various services brought at their door step, including registering for Unemployment Insurance Fund, while employers were able to make enquiries on proper ways of registering their workers for various employment requirements.
This led to a local branch of domestic workers in Sea Point requesting the Minister to address them as well. He granted them audience despite currently criss-crossing the province in a campaign that has seen him visit areas like, Beaufort West and Maraisburg, while today he is in Outshoorn, and is scheduled to be in Kannaland and George before attending the ANC rally in Knysna on Sunday.
True to its form as a service for domestic workers, the Sea Point meeting has been scheduled to carry on through evening so as to allow time for those who will be coming from work. The media is invited. Details are as follows:
Venue: St James Church
St James Street, Sea Point (opposite Pick n Pay at the Adelphi Centre)
Cape Town
Date: 12 March
