Department of Employment and Labour in Mpumalanga sets its eyes on the Road freight and logistics industry ,

The Department of Employment and Labour: Mpumalanga, in collaboration with key stakeholders in the Province will embark on a road freight and logistic blitz inspection from today, 12 to 16 August 2019. Interviews and advocacy session will take place at the weigh bridge in Middleburg in the Mpumalanga Province.  The site visits will also be done to inspect the actual workplaces and verify administrative documents.

The Road Freight sector has been inundated with challenges with regard to the conditions of employment. This sector requires collaborated efforts across an array of stakeholders in order to address these challenges and develop strategies to combat the mushrooming of unrests that can lead to loss of production.

The goal of these joint inspections is to ensure that the vulnerable workers are protected. An appeal is made to employers and employees of this sector to cooperate fully with the officials who will be coming to their premises for verification of information. Ensure that all employment documents in relations to your operations are available on site during this period.

The Departmental inspectors together with SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Health, National Bargaining Council Road Freight, Department of Transport and the Cross Boarder Road Transport Agency will be at the weigh bridge and some officials will visit workplace to inspect and enforce compliance on legislation administered by these departments for this particular sector.

Department of Employment and Labour will ensure the compliance with these legislations during the joint inspections:

  • Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Employment Equity Act
  • Basic Conditions of employment Act National Minimum Wage Act;
  • Unemployment Insurance Act;
  • Unemployment Contributions Act; and
  • Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Disease Act.

     

The protection of workers and the promotion of fair labour practices continue to be priority for the Department.
