The Department of Labour will play a significant role in reducing unemployment, poverty and inequality through a set of policies and programmes developed in consultation with social partners, which are aimed at:

Improved economic efficiency and productivity
Skills development and employment creation
Sound labour relations
Eliminating inequality and discrimination in the workplace
Alleviating poverty in employment

Labour Programmes

Below is a list of the programmes that fall under the Department of Labour

Basic Conditions of Employment
Applies to all employers and workers and regulates leave, working hours, employment contracts, deductions, pay slips, and termination
Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases
This act provides for and deals with injuries, disablement, disease and death caused by work-related activities.
Employment Equity
This act aims to promote and achieve equity in the workplace, by encouraging equal opportunity amongst all workers.
Labour Market Research and Statistics
Labour Market Research and Statistics
Labour Relations
Aims to support labour peace, democracy and worker participation in decision-making in the workplace.
Occupational Health and Safety
Provides measures to ensure the health and safety of all workers in the workplace.
Skills Development
Aims to promote the development of skills of the South African workforce.
Unemployment Insurance (UIF)
Provides funds to workers who may become unemployed.
