October is Productivity Month

by Lloyd Ramutloa last modified 2017-10-12 14:10

12 October 2017

The government entity tasked with promoting employment growth and productivity in South Africa has launched Productivity Month 2017.  During Productivity Month, in October, the importance of productivity in enhancing economic growth is brought to the fore through a series of productivity workshops and seminars.

The highlight of Productivity Month is the National Productivity Awards. The rationale behind Productivity Month is to showcase, share ideas, methods and perspectives on how companies can improve productivity.

In addition, the National Productivity Awards avails a platform for networking for business leaders and it is an opportune moment for industry captains and thought leaders to espouse and share knowledge.  The run-up towards the National Productivity Awards has been marked by a series of Regional Productivity Awards and workshops countrywide.

The broader objectives of productivity month are:
• To promote productivity within South African industry
• To raise awareness about the potential role of productivity in growing and developing the economy.
• To promote Productivity SA programmes and its outcome based solutions in place to assist ailing companies
• To increase South Africa’s competitiveness

Productivity Month initially started as a week of activities whereby efforts around creating awareness on productivity and competitiveness were intensified. Over a decade later the activities have developed into a fully-fledged Productivity Month that has proved to be a landmark annual campaign. The awareness campaign is championed by the Minister of Labour, the Honourable N M Oliphant, MP endorsed by industry.

Productivity SA will this year once again embark on an intensive awareness drive during the month of October. The success of previous awareness campaigns has galvanized the institution into ensuring that maximal impact is made during this month.  It is worth noting that whilst the organisation seeks to heighten awareness around productivity in the country and also highlight programmes in place to enhance and sustain productivity in South Africa throughout the year, Productivity Month is like a fair commemorating these efforts.

The objective of Productivity Month is primarily the promotion of the importance of productivity to every South African. The purpose of the month is to highlight the importance of productivity as a driver for sustainable and inclusive growth and development and the creation of decent jobs. Productivity serves to spur South Africans on in ensuring that our productivity levels are effective and efficient.

The National Productivity Awards will be held on 20 October 2017 at the Gallagher Estates in Midrand. Labour Deputy Minister, iNkosi Phathekile Holomisa is expected to deliver a keynote address. - End
