The department of labour’s formal inquiry into occupational health and safety at Assmang Plant in Durban has heard that workers are exposed to dangerously high levels of manganese dust and fumes at the Cato Ridge plant.

Occutech, a company hired by Assmang Plant to look into their state of occupational hygiene and safety tabled a report based on various risk assessments it had conducted from 1994 – 2003.   The report revealed that workers were exposed to poisonous fumes at every work area in the factory.  The inquiry aims at determining the possible causes of manganism which about 40 employees are believed to have contracted.

Assmang Plant will continue with cross-examination of the Occutech company.
