by lloyd last modified 2014-12-08 14:32

08 December 2014

The Thongathi Mall Structural Collapse Commission of Inquiry is to hear further testimony from Dr Andre Ballack, an engineer from Axion Consulting Engineers who was involved in the design of the Mall.

Ballack testified before the Commission of Inquiry last week that the doomed Mall project was being subjected to constant redesigns while the building was being constructed.

This week the Inquiry will have a three-day session with further testimony and cross-examination of Ballack starting on Wednesday to Friday (December 10 -12).

Ballack told the Inquiry last week that the project was pressed for time ahead of its expected completion on September 2014, saying that certain elements were not optimally designed at the time.

The Tongaat Mall Commission of Inquiry was appointed following the structural collapse of the Mall that led to the death of two workers and injury to 29. The Section 32 hearing, was instituted by the Department of Labour in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act - to gather evidence against parties whose negligence resulted in occupational injuries and death of workers.

The   Inquiry is held in Thongathi Municipal offices at 9h00.
