Labour law public comments’ deadline looms

by Gabriel Mothiba last modified 2011-12-05 02:59

16 January 2011

People wishing to submit written inputs into the labour law amendments have until tomorrow (Thur) to do so, the Department of Labour said today (Wed).

This comes hot on the heels of a taxing schedule of public hearings that saw senior officials of the department criss-crossing the country to obtain comments from stakeholders. This was after labour Minister, Nelisiwe Oliphant, had announced that the Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Employment Equity Act were up for review. Also part of the package was a presentation on the Employment Services Bill.

Thembinkosi Mkalipi, chief director for labour market policy, said the legal review was to respond to the growth of “non-standard’’ forms of employment in South Africa, especially labour broking – ensuring that labour legislation was in line with labour law developments – enhancing the effectiveness of labour market institutions like the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration and to fulfil the country’s obligations as a member of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Mkalipi said stakeholders could hand in their submissions to the nearest labour centre/office.
