Inspection blitz in Northern Cape targets Hospitality sector

The Department of Labour inspectors will be embarking on an inspection blitz targeting establishments in areas of Calvinia, De Aar, Kimberley, Postmasburg and Upington from 20-24 April 2015. Hospitality Sector means any commercial business or part of a commercial in which employers and workers are associated for the purpose of carrying out or  conduct hospitality activities like accommodation, prepare or serve refreshments to quests in establishments like hotel, motel, restaurant, guest house and others for a reward.

The Sectoral Determination 14: Hospitality Sector lays down conditions of employment for employers and workers in the Hospitality Sector such as hours of work, overtime, leave, particulars of employment and termination of employment. It also prescribes the minimum wage employers are required to pay. Currently the minimum wage is divided in two categories: For the period 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015.

Minimum wage for employers with 10 or less worker: R13.34 (per hour)

Minimum wage for employers with more than 10 workers: R14.87 (per hour)

The main focus of these blitz inspections will be to a inspect the level of compliance with the Sectoral Determination, Basic Conditions of Employment Act and Unemployment Insurance Act.

Establishments failing to comply will be issued with compliance orders and fines where applicable.
