12 November 2013

Public hearings into the funeral undertakers business are to move to Kimberley tomorrow after Department of Labour officials conducted meetings in Northern Cape towns of Springbok and Upington early this week.

The process form part of the Employment Conditions Commission (ECC) campaign to create a sectoral determination for the industry.

The drive will culminate with Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant announcing a new wage for the industry at the end of March 2014 in line with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA).

Shaun Feldman, Deputy Director of Employment Standards said the campaign will proceed to the Free State towns of Bloemfontein, Welkom and Phuthaditjhaba as well as Eastern Cape towns of Port Elizabeth, East London, Queenstown and Umtata next week. “ This is part of the ECC goal of ensuring that stakeholders across the country express their opinions to be forwarded to the Minister,” he said.

ECC is the body that advises the Minister of Labour about the wages and other basic conditions of employment.
