Department of Labour’s Compensation Fund public hearings on the amendments to occupational injuries and diseases legislation heads to inland provinces

Three provinces will next week play host to the Compensation Fund (CF), an entity of the Department of Labour’s public hearings on the amending of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) Bill.

The public hearings are designed to collect inputs on the recently published amendments to the COID Bill of 2018.

North West Province will host public hearings on Monday (26 November) and Tuesday (27 November) in Klerksdorp – Protea Hotel and Rustenburg – Orion Hotel.

Mpumalanga Province will play host on 28 November in (Nelspruit – Bundus Lodge) and Witbank’s – Fortis Hotel Highveld on 29 November 2018.

The week will round off with public hearings in Limpopo Province in Tzaneen – Hotel at Tzaneen on 29 November 2018 and at Polokwane’s Bolivia Lodge on 30 November 2018.

The most significant amendments proposed to the COID Act are:

·          Inclusion of domestic workers under the category of employees for purposes of benefits in terms of the Act.

·          Rehabilitation and Reintegration framework of injured and or diseased employees into the workplace;

·          Administrative amendments

·          Improvement of some benefits

The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act applies to all employers; and casual and full-time workers who, sustain workplace accident (are injured, disabled, or killed); or work-related diseases.

The COID Amendment Bill public hearing roadshow started on 19 November in Upington. This was followed by public hearings in Kimberley, Bloemfontein and Bethlehem.

The remaining public hearings will be held as follows:

·          Johannesburg – Birchwood Hotel on 03 December 2018

·          Pretoria – Manhattan Hotel on 04 December 2018

·          Durban – Gateway Hotel on 05 December 2018

·          Pietermaritzburg – Ascot Wedding and Conference Centre on 06 December 2018

·          Port Elizabeth – The Beach Hotel on 10 December 2018

·          East London – Premier Hotel Regent on 11 December 2018

·          Cape Town – Stellenbosch Lodge on 12 December 2018

·          George – Chilly and Chive Lodge on 13 December 2018

All the public hearings will be held from 09:00-11:00 am. -ENDS-
