by lloyd last modified 2018-05-23 13:49

The Department of Labour’s Directorate: Health and Hygiene of the Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) Branch is to host the Diving Regulations workshop for the burgeoning industry.

The workshop is the second of its kind to be held by the Directorate. Last year the Directorate held an inaugural workshop in Cape Town with a focus on compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and regulations to enhance sustainable economic growth.

This year’s workshop will be held on 7-8 June at UShaka Marine: Sea World Education Centre in Durban. The theme of the workshop is: “Compliance in the commercial diving fraternity”.

The workshop will discuss a range of topics including the following:

         Occupational health and safety in the diving industry

         Medical examination and fitness of divers

         Reporting of occupational injuries and diseases

         Risk assessment in the diving industry

         Management of the diving operations

         Application of pressure equipment in the diving industry

The workshop is expected to be addressed by Department of Labour Chief Inspector: Occupational Health and Safety, Tibor Szana; Department of Labour KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Chief Inspector, Edward Khambula; Department of Labour Senior Specialist: Occupational Health and Hygiene in the Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES), Bulelwa Huna; Department of Labour Chief Inspector: Diving, Nozi Maphoto; Department of Labour Deputy Director: Occupational Health and Hygiene, Jabu Mhlophe; Occupational Health and Hygiene Principal Inspector: Dr J Meintjies;  Occupational Health and Hygiene: Principal Inspector, W Mallon; and Upington Rescue and Salvage, Captain Nel.

There will also be a presentation on the personal protective equipment in the diving industry.

The Department of Labour is a key role player in ensuring that there is economic growth in the commercial diving industry, hence the certification of the diving schools as well as the development of the training standards. The Department is a member of the International Diving Regulatory and Certification Forum (IDRCF).

Commercial diving is mostly associated with the offshore oil industry; however there is also a lot of inland commercial diving. Some of the commercial diving and its specialised applications includes: marine salvage diving, offshore diving (working in oil and gas industry), inshore civil engineering diving, and ships husbandry diving.

The workshop will be attended by Chief Executives of the diving companies, directors in the diving companies, dive supervisors, client and contract representative, personnel involved in quality assurance and safety, diving schools instructors and supervisors, commercial divers and agents in the shipping industry.

NB: Media is invited to attend the workshop.

Venue: UShaka Marine: Sea World Education Centre.

Time: 08:00 for 08:30am to 15:30
