Department of Labour organises a walk to highlight the scourge of HIV and Aids

by lloyd last modified 2015-12-02 15:12

02 December 2015

In observance of World Aids Day and campaigns to fight the HIV/Aids scourge, the Minister of Labour Hon Mildred Oliphant and her Deputy Inkosi Phatekile Holomisa have organised a walk to commemorate the day on Friday (December 4).

Under the tagline “Play your part, Walk against Aids”, a walk has been organised to start at the Department of Labour’s Provincial Office in the Eastern Cape in East London to the Border Cricket Stadium. The walk will culminate with numerous activities including HIV Counselling and Testing and other commemorative events will be held in the Department.

Employees are encouraged to take part in these events in showing commitment to getting to Zero new HIV and TB infections; Zero HIV and TB-related deaths; Zero new infections and Zero discrimination.

The UNAIDS World AIDS Day theme for 2011 to 2015 is: “Getting to Zero”. In South Africa the scene was set during the official commemorative event held in KwaZulu-Natal on December 1 during the World AIDS DAY. South Africa marked World AIDS Day 2015 under a theme – “Towards an HIV-Free Generation: RISE. ACT. PROTECT. ZERO” – which is a call to action by communities.

The 2015 World AIDS Day is intended to further strengthen the dialogue around stigma and discrimination, and mobilise communities to respond to and expand access to prevention, treatment and support services.
