Department of Labour celebrates own Workers’ Day on 8 May

The Department of Labour is to host its own Workers’ Day celebration on 8 May 2015. The commemoration, a first to be celebrated by the department is in recognition of Workers’Day, which is traditionally associated with a day of protest worldwide for better wages and working conditions of workers.

Held under the theme: “Focusing the spotlight on the drivers of service delivery” – the department’s Workers’ Day celebration will be held at Stats SA building at Riebeck Street in Cape Town. It will be held from 9am-13:00.

The inaugural event is planned to be held annually. The event is expected to rotate among all provinces and will include staff as guests from various departmental offices including Labour Centres that are spread across the country.

Workers’ Day in South Africa is officially held on May 1. The day was officially recognised as a public holiday in 1994 to commemorate the struggles of workers.

Department of Labour Director-General, Thobile Lamati is expected to deliver a welcome address. Speakers at the commemoration will also include Honorable Labour Deputy Minister, Inkosi Phathekile Holomisa and the Honorable Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant who will deliver a keynote address.

Together – we can move South Africa’s labour market and economy forward!!!
