Department of Labour-appointed Grayston Drive Pedestrian and cyclist structural bridge collapse Inquiry hosts its first briefing

The Grayston Drive Pedestrian and cyclist structural bridge collapse inquiry appointed by the Department of Labour is to host its first briefing session next week.

The commission was appointed by the department following the collapse of the temporary bridge in the Grayston Drive Pedestrian and cyclist structure which led to the deaths of two people and injury to 19 others.

According to Lennie Samuel, the Presiding Inspector to head the Section 32 Inquiry into the collapse of the temporary walkway bridge between Sandton and Alexandra on the M1 freeway, the meeting next week is intended to spell out the terms of reference of the commission, set out the framework on the operations of the inquiry, identify witness and stakeholders. He also said the briefing would also spell out media protocols in regard to coverage.

The Section 32 hearing was appointed by the Department of Labour in terms of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act to investigate instances of negligence.

Samuel said all stakeholders have been given until January 2016 to submit all necessary documents that have been requested by the Commission. He said the first witness will be expected to take a stand in February next year.
