Compensation Fund alleged fraudsters to appear on Friday

by lloyd last modified 2011-09-08 10:37

7 September 2011

Three men accused of allegedly defrauding the Department of Labour’s Compensation Fund millions of rands are to appear in the Pretoria Specialised Crime Court on Friday (September 9).

The defendants are Maxwell Ramaphosa, Samuel Mfeleng, Jurry Sehunoe. The accused were expected in their last two Court appearances to plead. In what appeared to be an unrestrained indulgence in ‘delaying tactics’ the accused appealed to the Court for a postponement with Ramaphosa’s legal representatives citing a lack of information for starting with the trial. His co-accused Mfeleng had fired his lawyer provided to him by the Legal Aid Board for undisclosed reasons on the eve of the start of the trial and was given time to look for a replacement.

The accused are on an extended bail of R3000 each. They face 22 counts of fraud worth more than R3,8-million and 28 various counts of money laundering amounting to more than R860 000.

The men are alleged to have defrauded the fund changing personal details of claimants and using intricate processes to channel payments to assumed accounts.

The Compensation Fund is a public entity under the stewardship of the Department of Labour. The fund is responsible to cover for compensation of workers injured during work or diseases sustained or contracted by employees during the course of occupation. The Fund also covers for workers against death resulting from injuries and diseases sustained during occupation.
